Short Description: We study which type of utility (flow, forward-looking, or lifetime utility) the life satisfaction question in the SOEP measures, how it performs relative to an alternative set of questions that is more explicit regarding time horizons, and what the implications are for policy analysis and evaluation.
Methodological Details: Respondents were divided into four different groups, each of which received different treatment questions that dealt with life satisfaction.
